travel restart? When will international flights start again? On what factors will the timing and the roadmap depend? What are the concepts of u2018bubblesu2019 and u2018air bridgesu2019 being considered by global aviation regulators?Written by Pranav Mukul , Anil Sasi , Edited by Explained Desk | New Delhi | Published: June 1, 2020 11:24:53 am,XA woman uses a sanitising wipe on her seat on a Delta flight (AP Photo),From lockdown in metro cities to restrictions imposed by various countries on the entry of foreigners, u201cseveral factors need to be addressedu201d for the resumption of international flights, according to Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, who took to Twitter to list out the concerns given the rise in demand for restarting overseas flight operations.

,u201cMany international destinations are not allowing incoming passenger traffic, except for their own citizens or diplomats.

Within India, most international flights operate from the metros where travellers arrive from neighbouring cities & states.

Our metro cities were under various degrees of lockdown which are beginning to be lifted,u201d Puri said.

,He added that as India moves towards the critical mass of 50-60% operation of domestic flights, the ability to resume international operations would also improve.

,So, when will India allow regular International flights?Hours after the Home Ministry announced fresh guidelines pertaining to the countrywide lockdown to contain the coronavirus pandemic, Indiau2019s aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the suspension of scheduled international commercial passenger flights would continue until midnight on June 30.

u201cIt is once again reiterated that foreign airlines shall be suitably informed about the opening of their operations to or from India in due course,u201d the circular issued by the DGCA said.

,Domestic passenger flight services resumed in the country from May 25, two months after the announcement of the lockdown and suspension of all scheduled commercial passenger flights in India.

International air travel shall remain suspended, the MHA order said, adding that a decision on when to resume it would be taken after an assessment of the situation.

,But a decision on the timing might not be entirely Indiau2019s call u2014 given that this depends mostly on the destination countryu2019s assessment of India being safe, and consequent permissions that need to be issued to Indian carriers to fly to their airports.

,And that is where India could be low down on the list, as Covid-19 cases in the country continue to rise u2014 even as they have either peaked or are coming down in other geographies.

The post-Covid resumption pattern could hinge entirely on the discretion of individual countries and their aviation regulators.

,Countries like Sweden, the UK, Ireland, The Netherlands, and Slovenia have opened borders to EU tourists, while those such as Germany, Hungary, Romania, and Finland have opened up partially.

,Lufthansa has announced 3,600 weekly flights in June.

Together with its group airlines SWISS and Eurowings, Lufthansa is likely to operate 70 overseas flights as well.

However, the European Union is yet to take a call on whether it will reopen its external borders on June 15.

The Doha-based airline has also said that by the end of this month, it hopes to connect 80 destinations, including 23 in Europe, four in the Americas, 20 in the Middle East/Africa and 33 in the Asia-Pacific.

,The Centre on May 25 allowed the resumption of domestic flights with one-third capacity.

(Express photo/Nirmal Harindran),Have any countries restricted Indian citizens from flying into their borders? The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has notified a list of airports located in affected areas with high risk of Covid-19 transmission.

This list classifies all airports in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh as ones with high risk of transmission.

The list is continuously updated by EASA after consultation with EASA member states, and is based on information from World Health Organisation (WHO), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, and other u201creputable public health institutesu201d.

,This is one of the initial examples of aviation regulators segregating regions according to the rate of occurrence of Covid-19.

EASA has said that the list of airports has been established to support airlines and airports to put in place u201can extra layer of protection for the passengers and crew membersu201d.

,Also, in April, a study of 1,364 airports worldwide conducted by public health and environmental science specialists from Tel Aviv University, in partnership with a mathematician from the Oxford Mathematical Institute, suggested that if flights were to resume, many of the airports in India and China would pose the highest risk for the spread of the disease.

,The study said that Indiau2019s population density and frequent domestic travel put it at a high risk for outbreaks from infected passengers arriving from within the country.

,The study, which has not yet been certified by peer review, produced a model of the spread of Covid-19 using global air travel data for October after factoring in a broad resumption of flights across geographies.

Philippines to Qatar ticket price

I have been travelling to the Philippines from London on average 3 or 4 times a year for the last 17 years.

17 years ago my flights cost on average u00a3450 for a return trip, it remained roughly at this rate till around 6 years ago when there was an increase in price and my average ticket price was u00a3550 for return trip.

The majority of these flights were flying through the Middle East hubs and still seemed good value considering the distance and great service provided by the likes of Emirates and Qatar airways.

So after 10 years the price had increased by an average of u00a3100.

,Then Emirates made cuts to the service, and became more like a budget airline.

Baggage allowances were cut and passengers were expected to pay extra for baggage, onboard services were reduced, as were the loyalty points collected and became virtually worthless overnight.

At the same time Chinese airlines came into the equation.

They offered round trip flights from London to the Philippines for u00a3300 and included a large baggage allowances.

So passengers given the option often chose these flights.

Maybe the meals and the in flight entertainment system is not as good as Emirates, and the hubs you transit through are not as passenger friendly.

But you put up with that to save u00a3200 of the ticket price whilst getting a larger baggage allowance.

,I still make the journey every few months and find that flight price between airlines is very competitive, with regular promotional tickets available.

The most expensive return flight (Christmas 2016) KLM u00a3555 return.

Whilst my cheapest flight China Eastern (October 2018) was u00a3325 return.

My upcoming flight later this week is u00a3357 return on Air China.

And my flight in January is u00a3464 return on Singapore airlines, so as you can see there has not been any increase in ticket price, I am still paying the same as I paid 17 years ago.

,Yes local European budget airlines have seen some price increases, I have records of flights 10 years ago from London to Spain and Portugal for u00a310 each way.

These have increased a little I have just booked flights to Portugal for December and these are u00a323 each way, but now you have to pay u00a312 extra for 10kg carry on baggage which used to be free.

So yes there are some airlines and routes showing some small price increases.

Qatar to London flight time

I was on my way back to the US for some much needed R&R from Iraq and caught the first leg of my flight from Doha, Qatar to London Heathrow.

I was in business class and once the plane was at cruising altitude, I reclined my seat and attempted to fall asleep.

Five minutes into my journey to dreamland I got woken up by a tug on my foot from a little boy.

I peeked through my sleep mask and I see this little boy furiously pulling the bottom of my pants and trying to get me up.

I asked what he wanted and quizzed him as to where his parents were.

His mom was sitting across the aisle not even 2 meters away, just looking at her son disturb another passenger and didnu2019t care to stop him.

She asked if he was bothering meu2026.

Uh, why yes he is bothering the shit out of me.

Now I also have little kids probably the same age as this little one but I wouldnu2019t let them run wild on a plane waking random people up.

I asked her nicely if she could please stop her son from doing that and she just nodded her head and continued staring at her son.

Her husband didnu2019t even flinch or look away from his movie to see what was going on.

,After a few more times, maybe 3, of this little boy waking me up every 20 mins or so, I was ready to slap the dogshit out of the parents but I stood up, told the kidu2019s parents that I was about to u201cbeat the shit out of you bothu201d if they didnu2019t stop their kid from waking me up again.

The flight attendant actually saw the kid wake me up and warned the parents to stop their kid from waking other passengers.

,The couple were from somewhere in the Middle East (Qataris most likely) and had this arrogant attitude that just irked the hell out of the FA.

So she called the head FA and they asked the family to move to the back where they had a whole row to themselves.

,They got up and started complaining loudly to which the FA told them if they didnu2019t comply, she was going to inform the flight deck about their unruly behavior and have them arrested when we landed or if they continued being belligerent, theyu2019d divert the plane and have them really hemmed up by the local authorities.

At this point we were probably flying over Israel so that might have convinced them that landing in Israel (in a distress situation) wouldnu2019t have been in their best interest.

,They got up and were escorted all the way to the back where they had a row all to themselves and didnu2019t have to bother anyone.

,I also got a free upgrade to first class on the next leg of my flight from Heathrow to San Francisco.

,Good times.
