Will people someday use only a smartphone but not a laptop?

But I think they were a bit behind reality on that oneu2026 Iu2019d bet that some people had moved substantially to their smartphone as their primary computing device, if not only one, before the article was written.

,For others, the phone will never replace a u201creal computeru201du2026 but itu2019s not that simple.

About a decade ago I stopped using a laptop for much of anything.

I have desktop systems for music, electronics CAD, photography, video, and a few other things that are difficult-to-impossible to do on any tiny screen.

,Iu2019m typing this on my beach house PC, which has one 34u2033 3440x1440 and one 21u2033 1920x1080 monitor (not shown here).

Thatu2019s kind of my minimal for getting real work done.

,The main work PC at my other house a bit more tricked out.

And many, many times more powerful than a smartphone.

,But I also found that pretty much anything I could do well, without being frustrated, on a laptop, I could also do on a tablet and/or smartphone.

My laptop has been in my wifeu2019s office for the past year+, as a second computer for her virtual classroom.

I havenu2019t missed it at all.

,On the PC, Iu2019m doing serious work like CAD, video, photography, music, etc.

things that need lots of computational power, lots of storage, tons of DRAM, and the ability to use a variety of I/O devices, etc.

But for the average person, a 5u201310 year old desktop or laptop PC might well be more than they need.

And your smartphone from 2020 or 2021 is probably more powerful than that PC.

,So if I was just normal web surfing, watching videos, writing, light-weight games, etc.

I could be, as are many people, perfectly happy with a smartphone and/or tablet as my main, if not only, computing device.

Note as well that with a modern phone, you may not be as tied down as you think.

You can probably connect it to a USB Type-C dock.

You can get video up on a big screen in various ways u2014 maybe your TV, but still a big screen.

You can use Bluetooth keyboards, mice, etc.

No need to settle for the compromises of a mobile device when youu2019re not mobile.

Some phones even offer an expanded user u201cshellu201d for use on large screens.

,,In straight numbers, letu2019s compare my 2019 Smartphone, the ZTE Axon 10, to my laptop, the Asus Zenbook NX500.

For starters, the laptopu2019s got 16GiB of DDR3L DRAM, versus 8GiB of DDR4 in the phone.

And the laptopu2019s got 512GB of PCI Express 2.

0 2-lane SSD, compared to the phoneu2019s 256GB of UFS 2.

1 SSD (unspecified number of lanes).

A full UFS 2.

1 four lane interface can outperform a PCI Express 2.

0 2-lane SSD.

So without running a benchmark, Iu2019d wager the laptop is a bit faster on both, largely because itu2019s got twice the bus width to DRAM, and Iu2019m betting they went kind of cheap on the UFS chip in the ZTE.

But they arenu2019t very far apart in speed, all things told.

If this was DDR4X, the phone might actually be faster even with the single bus.

,For CPU, itu2019s the Intel Core i7-4712MQ versus Qualcomm Snapdragon 855.

Itu2019s awfully hard to find good cross PC/Phone benchmarks.

But without going into great detail, thereu2019s not much difference here.

In fact, based on a small number of correct comparisons made on a few benchmarking sites, they pretty much gave it a wash overall.

,The graphics on the Snapdragon 855 greatly outperform the Intel HD4600 in-chip graphics.

However, the laptop has a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M with 2GiB GDDR5 memory, which turns on whenever thereu2019s serious GPUing to do.

So the laptop is going to clobber the phone on GPU work, when that actually matters.

In other things, they both have 802.

11ac WiFi, the phone of course has an LTE Advanced cellular modem.

,Neither has a wired network.

However, the laptop has three USB 3.

2 Gen 1 ports (called USB 3.

0 back then I think) and the phone, naught but a Type-C USB 2.

0 port.

So not the best phone for any tethering activities.

There are phones with a USB 3.

x Gen 2 port, if you were in the market for a tetherable device.

x ports generally require a redriver chip, an expense they could leave out on a low cost flagship phone.

,Oh, and the price.

People think smartphones are expensive, and they can be.

But when I got the laptop, it was pretty high-end back in early 2015.

It went for $2,870.

The phone, in late 2019, was $449u2026 on a Christmas sale.

Itu2019s kind of insane that it only took four and half years for a phone at a fraction of a price to be in any way comparable to this laptop.

But there you have it.

The pace of smartphone development has just been nuts.

Sure, it can make calls.

Itu2019s a simple matter of the right peripherals and software, after all.

But I doubt u201cmaking phone callsu201d is in many top-ten lists of essential smartphone functions these days.

Today was the first day in the better part of a year I received two phone calls that were worth answering.

Meanwhile, hundreds of other sorts of communications went by on the same device.

,Itu2019s also natural for people to gravitate to the smartphone because, living in your pocket, itu2019s the most personal of personal computers.

Youu2019re not sharing your phone with anyone, in all likelihood.

In fact, itu2019s kind of an intrusion into personal space to borrow someone elseu2019s smartphone for something, a feeling Iu2019ve never had about setting someone else up on one of my computers if they need to do something online or whatever.

For example, Apple.

Apple used to be called Apple Computer, and sure, they still make computers.

But most of their income is from the iPhone.

Steve Jobs understood that, as smartphones got better, theyu2019d become more important than other types of personal computers.

,Google understood this as well.

Their bread and butter is based on their search engine.

As the mobile world was gathering around proprietary mobile operating systems, and companies like Apple and Microsoft were getting into Googleu2019s cloud computing territory, Google had to act.

So they bought the smartphone startup Android for $50 million, spend three years evolving the operating system, and introduced Android u2014 with Google built in.

Then they did the most 2000u2019s-software-company thing ever: they gave it away.

This ensured that most smartphone companies would use Android, and Googleu2019s ability to keep their search empire intact was secure.

,Android was also the first smartphone system that didnu2019t need to be tethered to a desktop computer of some kind.

That was another critical factor: you canu2019t replace the desktop personal computer with a pocket personal computer if that pocket device is little more than an extension of the desktop.

Google was perfectly positioned for this, being an internet company.

They were already tapping the internet to build connected things that worked anywhere, on any operating system, via the web browser.

So the smartphone was just another client device.

And Android launched as the the most Internet-aware operating system to date.

Cloud-based deployment of software, and setup-proof hardware, is absolutely ideal for classroom computing.

,You also know that smartphones are a very strong contender against the desktop/laptop PC, as new applications come out for Android and iOS, but donu2019t offer full support for Windows or MacOS.
