How can you connect your TV to your laptop in order to use your TV as the laptop monitor?

Turn TV into computer monitor wirelessly

There are quite a few ways to do it, but Iu2019ll just focus on the most simple and widely used methods.

The right method for you will depend on a couple of different things including the ports that are available on your TV and laptop.

Letu2019s get started.

,Connecting with HDMI cableHDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) cables are the most reliable (and easiest) way to connect your TV and laptop.

With an HDMI cable, you can send and receive video and audio between the two devices.

The HDMI cable is identical on both ends, so it doesnt matter if it goes in the TV or the laptop.

,Plug the HDMI cables HDMI inputs on both the laptop and a TV.

,Choose the input corresponding to the HDMI cable position (HDMI 1, HDMI 2, HDMI 3, etc.

) using the remote control.

,If you connect your laptop to your TV via a wire, you will get better picture quality and shorter lag times.

,Connecting with VGA CableYoure likely to find a VGA port on your laptop and your TV if you have older products.

VGA provides a lower video quality than HDMI due to its lower resolution.

Additionally, it only transmits video, so a separate audio cable will be necessary for handling audio.

,Plug the laptop into the TV using the VGA cable.

,Use 3.

5mm audio cables to connect the devices.

,Make sure both devices are turned on.

,With the remote control, select the RGB or PC input.

,Both devices are supposed to automatically establish a connection.

In the event that it doesnt, please make sure TV is selected under Settings > System > Display.

The resolution can also be adjusted to match your TV.

After youve done that, hit Windows + P, and then choose the Duplicate option.

,Connecting wirelesslyThe wireless connection between your laptop and TV is a good option if you want to avoid the above mentioned steps.

However, you will need a media streaming device to make the connection work.

You can use an Android TV since it has Chromecast built-in.

,Plug in the Chromecast and set it up on your TV.

If everything is set up correctly, youll be able to view Chrome tabs on the TV, as well as videos and files local to your laptop.

To cast a video, open your Chrome browser on your laptop, click the menu icon (three vertical dots) in the upper-right corner, and then select the Cast option.

You can then choose the content you want to cast via the Sources drop-down menu and click on the Chromecast you want to cast it to (if you have more than one).

,Connect the Chromecast to the TV and set it up.

,Click the menu icon (three vertical dots) in the upper-right corner of the Chrome browser.

,Choose the content you want to cast from the Sources drop-down menu.

,Choose the Chromecast you want to cast to.

,Please DM for more information.

Its HDMI or VGA ports are output only.

Can you use a TV as a computer monitor for gaming

You can, but it depends on your requirements.

,A computer monitor has:Higher cost for better quality colour, or higher resolution, faster response times or refresh rates.

,Faster panel response time 1ms - 6ms typical,Lower input lag time - designed for fast paced games,Less or zero ghosting when moving windows around or changing views,Lower dot pitch (designed to look good when sitting close 50cm away etc),All inputs are designed to support the native resolution of the monitor,LED monitors can have very low power usage,Dead sub-pixels can be hard to spot on a high resolution panel compared nto on a TV.

,Decent 4K monitors range from $500, up to many thousands of dollars.

,HDMI 1.

4 connections do not support UHD 4K at 60Hz, only at 30Hz, so UHD 4K is choppy when using it to play fast paced action games.

,DisplayPort 1.

2 supports 4K at 60Hz, and DisplayPort 1.

3 supports 4K at 120Hz, which in the future will support higher refresh rates and resolutions than HDMI 1.

4 or 2.

0 are capable of.

,HDR monitors are coming out later this year, and will support much higher colour gamut (spectrum), support OLED technology (better colours, and lower power usage) and offer much higher contrast levels than the best monitors do today.

TVs do not support this technology yet.

,A TV has:cheaper cost,Larger dot pitch (designed to be viewed from 4- 6m away for best results),slower response time (refresh rate can be high or low on a TV, depends),higher input lag time (can be laggy between pressing keys on the keyboard, and seeing a reaction on the screen, when running 3D applications.

),Plasma TVs used to suffer from image burn in, LCD and LED technology doesnu2019t have this problem, so avoid using a plasma TV as a monitor.

,Inputs are limited to HDMI and other AV inputs component/composite,DVI and VGA outputs on TVs often have a separate scalar board, so the resolution or clarity is lower than a monitor of the same resolution.

,TVs donu2019t usually support DisplayPort, only HDMI.

,Some TV panel types use a lot of power, compared to a computer monitor.

Pros and cons of using a TV as a computer monitor

I had a 40 1080p TV as a computer monitor.

It was great for gaming (motion smooting disabled to reduce display latency), but it was uncomfortable to use for general tasks; when placed at a comfortable viewing distance, it become uncomfortable to focus on the text.

,For clarification: I did change the pixel density in the display manager to accurately reflect the displays pixel pitch.

For a while, I also tried pushing the pixel density setting higher-than-actual, so that text was more comfortable to read, but I lost so much screen real-estate that I gave up.

I now run two 24 1080p monitors (once in landscape orientation, and one in portrait), which is a much more comfortable configuration for general computing.
