Grand Palace Bangkok tour

I still feel so utterly stupid when I think about how I was actually scammed.

Bear with me here.

,So my bestie and I went to Thailand last year.

It was truly a trip of the lifetime.

We stayed in a room with an Infinity Pool.

True story.

,All was great, well, except for this one scam that we fell for.

,This was in October.

Why is it important? I explain later.

,We were supposed to fly from Bangkok to Phuket on Tuesday at around 5 PM.

Since we had almost half a day remaining in Bangkok, we decided to go and visit the Grand Palace.

We booked a Grab (equivalent of an Uber) from our hotel to the Grand Palace, and the taxi driver dropped us across the road, and pointed the way we should take to reach the grand palace.

,It was 11 AM.

We started walking towards the palace, but weu2019re stopped by a Thai person.

After making small talk, he told us that The grand palace was closed for morning prayer and we should instead go and take a canal boat tour.

The Palace would open at 1 PM.

So he hailed a tuktuk for us (a three wheeler), and told us to pay the Thai fare for the boat.

Apparently for a regular person, the ferry was 3000 Baht, but for Thai people it was 1000 Baht.

,We had went only a few meters in the tuktuk, and something didnu2019t feel right to me.

I asked the driver to stop, and decided not to take the ferry ride.

,u201cWe would just wait here for the Palace to openu201d, I told him, and started walking towards the Palace again.

,This time around, an elderly Thai person stopped us.

He told us that he was a lecturer at the local university and was running late for a lecture.

But apparently he had an Indian teacher, and he loved Indians.

,Thatu2019s why he wished us Thai new year, and said that the palace was closed for celebrations till 1PM.

Instead we could do a canal tour and come back at 1PM.

Of course, at Thai rates which was 1000 Baht per person.

Now two people wonu2019t lie about the same thing, we thought.

We went and took the canal tour to temple of dawn instead.

We paid 2000 Baht total (for two people).

When we reached the temple of dawn, we saw the official price per person for a canal tour was 700 Baht.

So we were basically scammed off 600 Baht in total.

,But thatu2019s not what I felt the worst about.

I was stupid, and I paid for it, which was fine.

,Instead, I had only so much time to see the grand palace, and I couldnu2019t see it, because someone thought that making some money off me was more important than letting me enjoy what their country had to offer.

Oh, and why was it important that we visited Thailand in October? Because Thai new year is in April.

A simple google search would have shown me that.

But when the brain shuts down, you donu2019t really take any mitigating actions.

,So guys, donu2019t fall for this scam.

Check google.

Grand Palace is always open.

If you still want to take the canal tour, by all means, do.

But the tours start at Temple of Dawn, not at some Thai personu2019s backyard.
