Mathematics is the root of life.

It is all around us whether we want to accept it or not.

For us to even slightly understand the world we live in we need to make sense of the mathematics.

Not only does it help us with the understanding of things around us it challenges our brain to think harder and faster ; basically a way to exercise our brains.

Mathematics is truly a complicated unique and fascinating being and I believe that without it we truly cant move on and improve and only by learning and trying to understand its ways can we truly appreciate its existance.

The teacher was handing back a math test weu2019d completed, and explaining the answers.

,I was one of those students who really cared about my marks u2014 honestly, I probably cared far more than was really necessary for a 6th grader u2014 and I noticed that there was a question on the test that had been marked wrong that I was completely sure I had done correctly.

,The question looked something like this:,A hospital is running a lottery to raise funds for a new childrenu2019s ward.

The hospital is selling 5,500,000 tickets, and the odds of winning are 1 in 4.

Maria wants to be sure that she wins a prize.

How many tickets will she need to buy?,My answer was 4,125,001 tickets u2014 as the number of prize-winning tickets in the lottery would be 5,500,000/4 = 1,375,000.

In the worst case scenario, Maria would need to buy all of the losing tickets (which would equal the total number of tickets - the number of winning tickets = 5,500,000u20131,375,000 = 4,125,000) to ensure that she bought one winner.

After buying every losing ticket, Maria could be sure that the remaining tickets were all winners u2014 so if she bought 4,125,001 tickets, at least one would be a winner, even in the worst case scenario.

,My teacher had marked this wrong, and I was very curious about what I could have done wrong.

When she got to that question, she asked one of the students who had completed the problem correctly to read out the answer.

To my horror, the student read out: u201cMaria would need to buy 5,500,000 tickets to ensure that she won a prize.

Only by buying every ticket could Maria be sure that she had purchased a winning ticket.

,u201cHere, let me show you!u201d I said, u201cYou see, let me show you this with 12 tickets u2014 with 1 in 4 odds, three tickets would be winners u2014 therefore, if I bought 10 tickets, the worst possible scenario would be me buying 9 losing tickets and one winning ticket.

u201d The teacher looked at me like I had grown another head.

,u201cThatu2019s not how I taught you to do this problem.

Let me show you,u201d she proceeded to do the same example on the board with only four tickets u2014 of course, with four tickets, you needed to buy all the tickets to win a prize because there was only one winning ticket.

,I tried for about 15 minutes to explain to her that this was wrong u2014 I came up to the board and drew coloured circles to show winning an losing tickets, and redid my example with the 12 u2014 but she still wasnu2019t having it.

Finally, she exploded: u201cThatu2019s it, Iu2019ve had enough of this nonsense! Youu2019re wrong, because Iu2019m the teacher and I said so.

If you donu2019t sit down and zip your lips in the next five minutes, you have detention!u201d I had never had a detention in my life, and I was terrified of having a mark on my disciplinary record and upsetting my parents, so I sat down, defeated.

Now, onto the next questionu2026u201d,u2026May I just take a second, at the end of this lengthy essay, to thank this anonymous teacher for helping to cement a hatred of math and learning in my little brain that took years to work around, and caused me an enormous amount of pain and misery throughout my grade school years? To be honest, I still get an awful, gut clenching feeling in my stomach whenever I sit in a math classroom u2014 and I think it has a lot to do with this individual.

Youll be at peace.

,Be stubborn with your priorities, learn to say no.

,Stay away from aimless, negative people.

Theyll only pull you down.

It may be anything like learning to code, playing guitar, swimming, etc.

Youll get a boost.

You should reward yourself some recreation, but only after working your ass off.


Be with your purpose every moment.

2 interesting things I learned in math

In one of my job interviews this year, I was asked, u201cHow much do you think the chewing gum market is worth in the United States?u201d,If you havenu2019t encountered a question like that before, it might sound like a crazy thing for an interviewer to ask.

For one thing, I knew absolutely nothing about the chewing gum industry.

For another, if I ever actually needed that information, the smartest response would probably be to pull out my phone and Google it.

,But the purpose of doing estimations like that isnu2019t to figure out the right answer - itu2019s to practice structuring your thinking in a logical way.

You can learn the gist of how to do it in a minute, and you can use this kind of logic for the rest of your life.

,Estimations like these are often referred to as Fermi problems, or back-of-the-envelope calculations.

To solve one, youu2019re supposed to figure out a way to break the main question into a series of smaller components that can more comfortably estimate.

Then, you put them back together to arrive at an approximation of the final answer.

The trick is to ask small questions to reach a bigger solution.

For example, this was how I estimated the size of U.

Weu2019ll assume that age is evenly distributed among the population (not actually true, but close enough for our purposes.

,Small children under the age of 10, and older adults over the age of 50, are the demographics least likely to chew gum.

,If we do the math, that gives us a total of about 160 million gum-chewers in the U.


On average, each of those people probably chew at least 1 stick of gum every week.

,Most of the packs of gum Iu2019ve seen contain about 15 sticks of gum.

,There are 52 weeks in a year.

If we round up a little, that means the average gum-chewer buys about 4 packs of gum every year.

,Iu2019d guess that an average pack of gum costs about $5.

That means that 4 packs would cost $20.

,That gives us about $20 per person * 160 million people = $3.

I had no idea if that was right or not - for all I knew, some of my assumptions were completely ridiculous.

But maybe some of my wrong assumptions canceled each other out.

I Googled the question afterwards, and I found that the U.

9 billion in 2015, which means I at least got to an accurate order of magnitude.

What do you learn in high school math

In the locker room of my swimming pool there is a centrifuge to dry swimming suits.

By default it rotates about a minute, but you can stop it earlier.

,Understanding the physics of the drying, I reached the conclusion the residual moisture of the swimming suite is negative exponential, i.


, proportional to e^{-at} , for some positive constant a, t being the time.

That led me to the hypothesis that about 5 sec will be enough to dry without gaining any meaningful improvement for longer periods.

Brief experiment confirmed my theory.



Obviously you could reach this conclusion experimentally, had you been willing - but, isnu2019t it nice to understand why?

Where do you apply the principles of mathematics

I apply the principles of mathematics to all facets of my life.

By principles, I take it you mean the underlying premise of mathematics which is way more than just operating on numbers.

Abstraction, logic, rigor, deduction, and proof are all very powerful tools at our disposal.
