What are the social classes in the U.K. like?

List of social classes

No, not really.

Itu2019s far too complex and fluid for that.

,Once upon a time, as it says in childrenu2019s fairy stories, there was a country called England, and it had three social classes: Working Class, Middle Class and Upper Class.

It was all a bit like this:,But that was a long time ago, over fifty years now, I think, and it really is not anything like that simple these days.

,Many people recognise this one, sometimes called the A-B-C1 system, but also the NRS system, which I think was devised by people in the marketing industry.

,Itu2019s more subtle than the old Upper-Middle-Working Class system, and divides the country into six demographic groups, rather than three, which makes it far more useful, but even so, many people would not recognise themselves as belonging to any one of the six groups.

A more subtle list of seven groups made its appearance in 2013,And even this is probably still not right; people are much more complicated than any of this suggests.

Many people would say very firmly that they donu2019t see themselves as fitting any of these labels precisely.

,Social class these days in the UK is most definitely NOT related to income.

Americans in particular tend to think itu2019s all about money, and it isnu2019t, in the UK, whatever it might be in the US.

You can have money and be firmly in what used to be u201cWorking Classu201d territory, or be frightfully Upper Class and as poor as the proverbial church mouse.

,Most of all, itu2019s inclined to be about attitude, education and mind-set.

And that doesnu2019t help the advertisers at all!
